Which GPS Trackers Require a Subscription? A Checked Comparison
October 09, 2026
Quick answer: most vehicle trackers do charge a subscription for the SIM and the data, and four of the six brands compared here charge it every month for as long as the tracker works. Two do not: Moto Watchdog and the trackers sold on this site. Because the recurring cost is usually far larger than the hardware price, that one difference decides what you actually pay over five years.
The question almost every buyer asks is whether a GPS tracker needs a subscription. The honest answer is that it depends on how the connection is paid for. A cellular tracker needs a SIM and a data allowance; some brands sell that to you once with the hardware, and most charge for it every month for as long as the tracker works.
The comparison
Checked 2026-10-10. Each figure is what the brand states on its own page or product listing, and the sources are listed at the end of this page. Prices and plans change, so treat the date as part of the claim.
| Brand | How the data is paid for | What the brand states |
|---|---|---|
| Tracki | Subscription required | Listed as "Subscription Required, Cancel Anytime" on its own product listings. Its pricing page sells hardware bundled with a 6-month, 12-month or 2-year subscription included. |
| LandAirSea 54 | Subscription required | "Fees start as low as $9.95 a month for annual plans and $19.95 for monthly plans. No contracts, cancel anytime." |
| Bouncie | Subscription | Advertises "No hidden fees. No activation fees." and an account area to manage a subscription; it does not state the monthly price on the page checked. |
| Vyncs | Plan, first year included | "One year of free services. No contract." Each plan includes the device, SIM and a year of data; stored history is tied to holding a valid plan. |
| Moto Watchdog | No monthly fee | "$0 a month. Forever." Lifetime 4G data included, one-time price $129.99. |
| VITALGLOW | No monthly fee | The 4G SIM and its data are included with the device. One-time purchase, no subscription and no activation fee. |
Read the second column and the pattern is clear: four of the six charge again after purchase, and the two that do not are on this page because that is the product being sold here. That is worth stating plainly rather than pretending the table is neutral.
What the monthly figure costs over five years
A subscription tracker is cheap to buy and expensive to own, and the arithmetic is not close. At the $19.95 monthly rate LandAirSea states, five years of one device costs $1,197 in subscription alone, on top of the hardware. At $9.95 on the annual plan it is $597.
The comparison that matters is therefore not device against device but device plus five years of connection against the same thing. A $30 tracker on a $19.95 plan is a $1,227 tracker. This is why brands can advertise low hardware prices: the hardware is not where the money is.
What to check before you buy any of them
Is the SIM included, and for how long? "Subscription required" and "SIM included" can both be true: the SIM ships with the device and the data is billed monthly. What matters is whether the data stops when you stop paying.
What happens to the device if you cancel? On most subscription trackers it becomes a plastic brick, because the location data has to travel over a network that costs somebody money. Ask this before assuming you can pause.
Is there a contract, and can you go month to month? LandAirSea states no contracts and cancel-anytime terms; its cheapest rate requires an annual or two-year prepayment, and the month-to-month rate is higher. That is a normal shape for this market, and worth understanding before choosing a plan.
Does the price change after the first year? Introductory rates are common. The rate you will pay in year three is the one that matters.
The honest limit of this page
This comparison covers the brands a buyer is most likely to be weighing against each other, and it records only what each one publishes. Where a brand does not state a price on the page checked, this page says so instead of estimating. Prices and plans change; if you are reading this well after 2026-10-10, verify against the brand's own site before deciding.
If you want the version of this with no recurring charge, the trackers sold here include the SIM and the data, and the no monthly fee guide covers how that works and what it gives up.

Questions buyers ask about tracker subscriptions
Does a GPS tracker need a subscription?
It needs a SIM and a data allowance, but that does not have to be billed monthly. Some brands sell the connection once with the hardware and others charge for it every month for as long as the tracker works. Which one you are looking at decides the five-year cost far more than any specification does.
Which brands require a subscription?
As checked on 10 October 2026: Tracki lists every product as subscription required; LandAirSea states plans are required for each device, from $9.95 a month on annual plans to $19.95 monthly; Bouncie advertises no hidden or activation fees and provides a subscription management area; Vyncs includes a first year of service and ties stored history to holding a valid plan. Moto Watchdog and VITALGLOW both state no monthly fee.
What happens to the tracker if I stop paying the subscription?
On a subscription tracker the device stops reporting, because the location data travels over a network that somebody has to pay for. That is worth understanding before assuming a plan can be paused rather than cancelled.
How much does a subscription cost over five years?
At the $19.95 monthly rate LandAirSea states, five years on one device is $1,197 in subscription alone, on top of the hardware. On the $9.95 annual-plan rate it is $597. Comparing device prices without that figure understates what a subscription tracker actually costs.
Subscription terms are one thing to compare, and what each brand publishes about its own hardware is the other - the two tables answer different questions.
Where the same question has been asked about one specific brand rather than about plans in general, the Moto Watchdog GPS tracker review sets out what can and cannot be established about that device without testing it.
